What Is ChatGPT Space? A Shared Workspace for You and AI That Never Disappears

🗂️ Why does AI work keep disappearing?

You ask ChatGPT for help, it gives you a great answer, then you close the chat. A few days later you come back and have to explain everything again: what the project is, where the numbers came from, where the last draft stopped. Your whole team is working on the same thing, but everyone has their own separate conversation with AI, so nobody sees what anyone else is doing.

At DevDay 2026, held on September 29 in San Francisco, OpenAI admitted exactly this problem: most AI work today simply disappears into chats. Their answer is called ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace for people and AI, not just another chat window.

📦 What is ChatGPT Space?

Think of Space as a shared room your whole team works in, with you, your coworkers, and AI all inside. That room contains:

  • Pages: documents built for people and AI to edit together. The AI can research a topic, draw a chart, or rewrite a paragraph, while you give feedback right there on the page instead of copying text back and forth.
  • Files and project material: slides, spreadsheets, and notes all live in one shared place, becoming a team knowledge base instead of scattered chat histories.
  • Dots working inside the room: dots, OpenAI's always-on AI agent, can make small decisions on its own and leave the results in the Space for someone to review, instead of quietly vanishing after one chat.
  • Scheduled or event-triggered work: a team can have AI run automatically on a schedule, or whenever a new email or Slack message arrives, with nobody needing to press a button.

The key idea: Space keeps a living record of the whole project that survives after any single conversation ends.

🤝 How is it different from a normal chat?

A regular ChatGPT conversation is like a private talk that ends when you close it, visible only to you. Space is closer to a shared Google Doc, except the AI can actually step inside that document and work alongside you, not just answer and stop.

It also differs from using a single AI agent: instead of one assistant doing one task for one person, Space is a place where multiple people and multiple AI tasks share the same context, so when you return a week later, you still see the full progress instead of starting the explanation over.

💼 Who can use it, and for what?

ChatGPT Space is currently available on the Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, on both desktop and web. It is aimed at teams and companies running longer collaborative projects, for example:

  • A marketing team building and continuously updating a shared campaign document with AI.
  • A product team letting AI summarize customer feedback every time a new email arrives, updating a shared page automatically.
  • A research team having AI draft a report while the whole team edits it directly, instead of passing versions back and forth.

Space is just one of more than 20 announcements at DevDay 2026, alongside other headline-grabbing launches like the cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model, the coding tool Codex running 8 times faster, and the pricier Pro 500 plan.

🧭 Does it matter?

The whole industry is moving the same direction: AI is no longer just a chat box answering one question at a time, it is becoming a constant presence inside a team's shared workspace, quietly working and leaving results for people to review. Not long before this, Claude Opus 5.5 made headlines for coding non-stop for 20 hours without human intervention, a sign that AI models are increasingly trusted with longer-running work, not just quick answers.

If your team is still using ChatGPT in scattered, separate chats, this is a good moment to consider a shared workspace instead, so the effort you put in with AI stops disappearing every time you close the browser tab.

If you are still getting familiar with the basics, start with what is an AI agent, and how is it different from a chatbot before trying more advanced tools like Space.
