Universal Modder: the AI tool that merges Minecraft into GTA V using Claude Code

🎮 When Minecraft suddenly shows up inside GTA

A clip making the rounds this week: Minecraft's Steve glides on an elytra over the skyline of Los Santos, the familiar setting of GTA V. A little further on, Minecraft's fiery "Nether" dimension spreads across the streets, and Minecraft mobs brawl with the LSPD. Two games that never had anything to do with each other are now running side by side in one video.

The person behind this mashup is not a game studio. It is an open source tool called Universal Modder, released by developer Rehan Sheikh on September 30, 2026. In just a few weeks the project passed 7,700 stars on GitHub, becoming the most talked about name in the current wave of "AI game modding."

🤖 What Universal Modder actually is

Universal Modder is not a ready made mod you download and play. It is a toolkit of instructions that lets an AI coding agent (an AI assistant that can write and run code on its own) tinker with and modify a game you already own on your computer.

It works with several different AI assistants, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot. You just point an agent at the game, and it handles the rest through a 10 step process:

  1. Look up prior work: check whether anyone has already modded this game, to avoid starting from scratch.
  2. Recon: figure out which engine the game runs on, from over 20 supported engines (Unity, Unreal, Godot, .NET/XNA, and more).
  3. Build a safe lab: back everything up before touching anything.
  4. Analyze the code: use reverse engineering tools like ILSpy and Ghidra to understand how the game works.
  5. Build a working prototype: write a small code change to test the idea.
  6. Generate new assets: create images, 3D models, and audio through the fal platform.
  7. Verify in game: run the game to check nothing breaks.
  8. Record a showcase video: automatically put together a clip of the result.
  9. Package it: bundle everything into a finished mod.
  10. Document findings: save what it learned so the next run, or another agent, does not have to start over.

Besides the Minecraft-in-GTA V clip, the community has used Universal Modder to add an arsenal of AI generated sprites to Terraria (via a tModLoader mod), and to build an entire new civilization with AI rendered 3D units for the strategy game Age of Empires II.

⚠️ What to know: not "piracy," not for cheating

Universal Modder sets clear limits for itself. You must own the original copy of every game you combine; the tool does not redistribute copyrighted assets, it only edits files locally on your own machine. The project also refuses to touch online games that use anti-cheat systems, meaning it cannot be used to cheat against other players online. This stays a tool for single player experimentation and fun, not for breaking multiplayer games.

🧠 Why this matters even if you do not code

What stands out is not whether Minecraft running inside GTA looks good or bad. It is that making this happen used to require a skilled programmer, deep knowledge of reverse engineering, and weeks of manual work. Now an AI coding agent like Claude Code can carry out most of that process on its own, while a person just describes the idea and watches the result take shape.

It is also a concrete, hands on example of where AI agents are heading: instead of waiting for step by step instructions, the AI runs a long chain of tasks (scanning the game, writing code, generating art, testing, recording video) and only reports back once it is done. If you have read about using Claude Opus 5.5, Blender and Unity to build a playable 3D game in a single session, Universal Modder is the next chapter of the same story: AI is not just helping build new games from scratch, it is now helping edit and combine games that already exist.

If you are not sure what Claude Code is, or why a command line tool built for programmers can also mod video games, the guide What is Claude Code, a full install and usage guide explains it from the ground up.

❓ FAQ

Is Universal Modder free? Yes, it is an open source project under the MIT license, so anyone can download the source code to use or contribute to it.

Do I need to know how to code to use it? You need to install an AI coding agent (for example Claude Code) and know how to run it on your computer, but the actual code changes to the game are written by the AI. Some comfort with the command line still helps.

Does using this tool break copyright rules? The project requires you to own a legitimate copy of every game you combine, and it does not redistribute the developer's copyrighted assets. Modding a game you already bought is usually tolerated by publishers, but terms vary by title, so it is worth checking first.

Can it be used to cheat in multiplayer games? No. Universal Modder refuses to touch online games that have anti-cheat systems in place.

Who built this project? Developer Rehan Sheikh released Universal Modder on GitHub on September 30, 2026, along with an active Discord community.
