ChatGPT Finances for Free Users in the US: What Can It Actually Do?
ChatGPT can now answer money questions using data from accounts you choose to connect. On October 2, 2026, OpenAI said Finances was rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States, joining Plus and Pro. If you live elsewhere, including Vietnam, this is a product update to watch rather than a feature you can assume is available today.
Finances helps you understand your financial information in one place. It cannot move money or make trades for you.
🧾 What can Finances show?
You can connect supported financial accounts through Plaid. Depending on the data your institution provides, the Finances dashboard can show spending categories, upcoming bills, recurring subscriptions, net worth and investments. Some institutions share balances but not complete transaction histories or loan details, so the dashboard may be incomplete.
Eligible users can separately connect credit report data through Experian. Connecting a bank through Plaid does not turn on the credit feature, and a bank connection is not required for it. ChatGPT displays a VantageScore 3.0 based on the Experian report, which updates monthly. Your score may differ from one shown by another service.
Instead of opening several banking apps to ask where your money went this month, you can ask Finances in plain language. For background on what this technology can and cannot do, see our beginner's guide to AI.
Getting started in the US
- Open Finances in ChatGPT and select Get started. You can also type
@Finances, connect my accountsin a conversation. - Select Connect with Plaid, complete the connection flow and choose which accounts to share.
- Return to ChatGPT and wait for the initial sync. It usually takes minutes but can take longer.
- Check the last sync time before asking about recent activity. Credit data requires a separate Experian verification flow.
OpenAI lists Finances for Free, Go, Plus and Pro on web, iOS and Android in the US. The Free and Go expansion is rolling out, so eligible users may not see it immediately. The cited OpenAI documents do not announce availability in Vietnam.
Three useful questions to ask
Start with a narrow question and a clear time period:
What were my three largest spending categories this month? For each one, tell me which connected account you used and when it last synced.
Next, ask which subscriptions you pay for each month and whether any charges look duplicated. Or ask which spending categories you could review if you want to save [amount] monthly. Our guide to writing clearer ChatGPT prompts has more examples.
If a figure looks odd, ask which transactions were counted. Transfers between your own accounts, refunds or pending duplicates can distort a spending summary. Compare the answer with your original statements. AI can categorize a transaction incorrectly, and an institution may send incomplete or delayed data.
Managing your information
You choose the accounts to connect. You can disconnect Finances in Settings or manage individual accounts in the Accounts tab on the Finances page. OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after disconnection or account removal. Information already in past conversations must be deleted separately if you want to remove it too.
ChatGPT can save goals such as “I am saving for a car” as financial memories. You can view and delete these on the Finances page. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts or use memories for personalization.
Before connecting, check Settings → Data controls for your choices about model training. If you connect Experian, enter identity verification details in Experian's form, not into a ChatGPT message.
What Finances cannot do
Finances cannot transfer money, pay bills, place investment trades, change account settings or file taxes. It is not a substitute for a qualified financial, tax or legal professional. Use its responses to understand your position and prepare better questions before making an important decision.
You can still ask ChatGPT about a budget using information you supply manually. That is different from having access to the connected Finances feature.
