🎙️ Write A Podcast Script With ChatGPT Or Claude In 15 Minutes

Got a topic you want to talk about on your podcast but your mind goes blank in front of the microphone? With just 15 minutes and ChatGPT or Claude (both have solid free plans), you can walk away with a complete script: a hook that grabs attention, three to four clear content sections, and a tidy closing, ready to record.

🧰 What you need

Just two things:

  • A ChatGPT account (chat.openai.com) or a Claude account (claude.ai). The free plan is more than enough for this.
  • A specific topic and a few points you already want to mention (bullet points in your head are fine, you do not need a finished draft).

If your episode has a guest, prepare a bit more: the guest's name, and two or three questions you definitely want to ask.

🪜 Step by step

Step 1: Describe your show and this episode's topic

Paste this prompt, replacing the brackets with your own details:

You are a professional podcast script writer.
My podcast is called [podcast name], and its general theme is [general theme, e.g. small business, parenting, technology].
My listeners are [audience, e.g. office workers who want to start a side business].
This episode is about: [specific topic of this episode].
I want to mention these points: [list 3 to 5 points you already have in mind].
Desired length: about [10/20/30] minutes at normal speaking pace.

Ask me up to 3 clarifying questions before you write the script.

ChatGPT or Claude will ask a few follow up questions (for example, whether you want a fun or a serious tone, or whether there is a guest). Answer directly and specifically, the more concrete your answers, the closer the script will match what you actually want.

Step 2: Ask for an outline before the full script

Do not let the AI write the whole long script right away, ask for an outline first:

Before writing the full script, give me an outline with:
1. Opening (a hook that keeps listeners in for the first 15 seconds)
2. 3 to 4 main content sections, one summary sentence for each
3. Transitions between sections
4. A closing with a call to action (follow, leave a review, or visit the website)

Just the outline for now, no full dialogue yet.

Read this outline first. If any part feels off topic or misses an important point, fix it right here, it is much faster than rewriting the whole detailed script later.

Step 3: Approve the outline, then ask for the full script

Once the outline looks good, paste this next:

This outline works, keep the same order. Now write the full script based on it,
in natural spoken language, like a real conversation, not formal written text.
Turn each content section into dialogue I can read straight into the microphone.
Add notes in square brackets wherever I need to add my own personal example,
for example: [tell the story of your first customer here].

Those square bracket notes matter a lot: the AI does not know your real stories, so it leaves a gap exactly where personal material belongs, which is what makes a podcast sound real instead of robotic.

Step 4: If you have a guest, ask for interview questions too

Based on the script above, write 8 interview questions for a guest named [guest name],
who works in [guest's job or field].
Order the questions from easy to deep, the first question should be light so the guest feels comfortable,
and the last 3 should dig into their lessons learned or personal story.

Step 5: Read the whole script out loud before recording

Read it out loud, not silently. Whenever a sentence feels clunky or you stumble, shorten it right away. AI sometimes writes sentences longer than how people actually talk.

✅ Sample result

For the topic "Why you do not need a lot of capital to start an online shop", a sample script looks like:

  • Opening: "A lot of people think starting an online shop needs tens of thousands of dollars for inventory. Today I am telling the story of someone who started with less than 100 dollars..."
  • Section 1: Why low capital still works (sell first, stock later model)
  • Section 2: Three things to spend on right away, three things that can wait
  • Section 3: Common mistakes that burn beginners' money
  • Closing: A call to action asking listeners to comment the topic they want for the next episode

💡 Tips for better results

  • Always ask for the outline before the full script (step 2), fixing an outline is much faster than fixing a whole script.
  • Keep sentences short, AI tends to write longer sentences than how people naturally talk, you can directly ask it to "write short sentences, like talking to a friend".
  • Paste a short transcript of a podcast style you like into the prompt so the AI matches your tone.
  • Once you have the script, you can turn it into a rough audio draft with a text to speech tool.

⚠️ Limits to keep in mind

  • AI does not know your personal stories, your specific numbers, or your guest, it only guesses from the context you give it. Always double check and replace the bracketed notes with real material.
  • If your podcast covers numbers, laws, or professional advice (finance, health, legal), verify the source before reading it out loud, do not trust numbers the AI makes up.
  • The tone AI writes at first is often a bit generic and safe, you need to read it again and add your own personality so it does not sound like every other AI assisted podcast.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for writing a podcast script? Both work well for this on their free plans. Claude tends to write slightly more natural, less cliched sentences, while ChatGPT responds fast and is more familiar to most people. Try both with the same prompt and pick whichever matches your voice better.

Does an AI written script need a lot of editing? Yes. Treat it as a strong first draft that saves you time, not a final version. Always read it out loud, replace the bracketed notes with real stories, and trim long sentences.

What if my podcast has no guest, just me talking? Skip step 4 and focus on getting a solid outline in step 2, because when you are speaking solo, a clear structure matters even more than tone.

Do I need to pay for any of this? No. The free plans of ChatGPT and Claude are enough to write a complete podcast script. You would only need to pay if you want a high quality AI voice to test a draft recording before the real one.

How do I make it not sound like "AI wrote this"? Add personal stories, concrete examples, and your own natural, imperfect way of speaking. Read it to a friend before the real recording, they will immediately point out anything that sounds forced.
