ChatGPT Now Lets You Build Apps That Make Money
ChatGPT is no longer just a chat window, it can be your own storefront
In late September 2026, OpenAI announced something that could change how people make money with AI: the Apps SDK, a toolkit that lets anyone build an app that lives right inside the ChatGPT chat window. No new tab, no separate download, users just type and your app shows up, complete with buttons, maps, and forms, working like a real app.
That is why several tech channels called this the "most valuable announcement" at OpenAI's DevDay 2026. It opens a brand new way to make money with AI, even for people who are not strong coders.
How is an app inside ChatGPT different from a regular chatbot
Until now, when you asked ChatGPT a question, it only answered in text. With the Apps SDK, developers can attach a real interface to that answer: a map to pick a hotel, a video player, a form to book an appointment. The app still runs on a server (a remote machine that processes the data) controlled entirely by its own developer, so they decide pricing, data storage, and security on their own terms.
The first seven launch partners already running inside ChatGPT are Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify and Zillow. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to find a hotel through Booking.com or quickly put together a design in Canva, all without leaving the conversation.
How developers can make money from it
OpenAI has not released full monetization details yet and says more is coming later in 2026. But one key piece has already been revealed: the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a mechanism that lets users buy things directly inside the chat window without leaving for another website. In plain terms, if your app sells a product or service, a customer can pay right there inside ChatGPT, no extra steps.
Another notable feature is Sign in with ChatGPT: a user's existing monthly ChatGPT subscription can cover the AI processing costs inside your app. You do not have to pay for every user's AI usage yourself, the plan they already pay OpenAI for covers that part.
Why 800 million users matters
ChatGPT now has roughly 800 million weekly users. For a small developer, the hardest part is usually not building the product, it is finding the first people willing to try it. The Apps SDK solves exactly that problem: your app sits inside a place nearly a billion people already use every day. Users do not need to know your app exists beforehand, they can simply mention it by name, or ChatGPT suggests it at the right moment in the conversation.
You do not need to be a strong coder to start experimenting
This is the part that matters most for non technical readers. The Apps SDK is currently available in Developer Mode, and you can pair it with "vibe coding", describing in plain language what you want and letting AI write the hard parts of the code instead of typing every line yourself. An app inside ChatGPT essentially behaves like a kind of AI agent, it does not just answer, it actively does work for you, similar to how dots, OpenAI's always on assistant also unveiled at the same event, operates.
When will anyone be able to submit their own app
Right now OpenAI is only letting a small group test the system. Based on the roadmap they shared, sometime in 2026 submissions will open to every developer. After submitting, an app goes through review, and if approved it appears in a directory where ChatGPT users can find it naturally through conversation, with no paid advertising needed to get discovered.
This news is part of a wider wave of announcements from DevDay 2026, the same event where OpenAI also cut model prices and sped up Codex, its AI coding tool.
What to keep in mind
This opportunity is still new, and many money related details, including any revenue share, have not been announced yet, so do not rush to invest huge effort before OpenAI gives clearer numbers. But if you are already learning to build products with AI, now is a good time to experiment at a small scale: one simple idea, a test build in Developer Mode, and keep an eye on when the official submission window opens.
